Marty Moates LOP YZ465

There was a great discussion about Jim Pomeroy's GP Bultaco awhile back and it started me thinking about another mysterious GP winning bike.  Marty Moates being the first American to win the 500cc USGP was amazing, but the fact that he won the race on a non-factory bike, to me, was even more amazing.

There is some mythology out there about this amazing piece of machinery, but I was wondering what any of you might know about the LOP YZ465?

I used to have that race on tape from when they showed it on Wide World of Sports back in 1980.. wish i could find it now.

I have that article also.  A few years ago on the VintageFactory dot Com discussion board someone posted they had been given the opportunity to ride the bike and actually crashed it.  He also stated that he was told the frame was a one-off special (that may account for the sub-210lb weight).

This bike was shown at the Primm collection, but it is missing the magnesium Simons forks.  It was reportedly still owned by Moates.



The bike was auctioned off in November 2010.  I wonder how much it went for?

The bike that went to auction has a lot of things changed from the one in the Primm colection (forks, handlebars, decals etc).. which setup is the one Marty used?

the auctioned bike has different pipe and carb and forks and axle
plus other stuff i think its the primm one and the auctioned one is the same one changed and cleaned up

Having purchased the MXFiles Carlsbad USGP:1980 DVD. what I can tell you is this;

Marty had a replica of LOP's USGP winning bike made by his brother-in-law who had been his mechanic that day. The replica had the yellow Simons forks that was on the bike at the auction. Marty's replica bike was ridden by Doug Dubach at the 2010 USGP for a lap of honor in memory of Marty. I believe the USGP LOP bike is still owned by Lorens Offner the owner of LOP. The replica bike is what was likely auctioned having been owned by Marty
