What has followed me home
«

I just got hold of what I was told was a 1990 250exc. The Vin number is "GS250 VBK GSK200LM 400606" and has 3/90 on the plate also. So I think it's a 1990 250gs. Then the engine number is "0-556*04475*" which makes me think it's a 300 motor. The only other numbers I've found besides part numbers is on the side of the cylinder it has "stroke 73".
Can anyone please tell me what I have bought. Thanks in advance.

Kick start on the left or the right?
89 and older = on the left.
90+ = on the right.
Compliance date means very little on those Bert Flood KTMs...

Too late, I went down to the shed earlier and welded an old spanner onto the gearshaft

Your right there Nathan. I picked up a 495MX in 1982 for a cousin of mine who lived in NSW. Bert asked if I wanted a compliance plate to go with it. I said yes thinking if it wasn't needed it wouldn't matter. He scribbled on one with the details of the 495 and also gave me a blank one as a spare
. He also ground down the carby slide return spring because he said they are too heavy. I remembered this as the throttle stuck in 4th on a near balance point wheelie. I had visions of destroying my cousins bike before he even got to see it.
Cheers, Grahame

The kick start is on the right hand side. It also has conventional forks with "Cartridge System" sticker on them

What colour are the plastics, seat, frame and hubs?
Pretty sure that
some
models in 1994 or 95 were the first to go back to RWU forks - but I thought it was only the 4-strokes until 1996. Surely even Bert's compliance dates weren't
that
whacky?
Pics will be a massive help.

0.556.****** is definitely 1990 300 motor. sounds like someone has had a play and fitted different motor and forks. Nathan is spot on when he says some 1994/1995 models had conventional forks, majority of Aust models had WP U/S forks though, picture on the front of the spares book shows 250 fitted with conventional forks.

The plastics are white with a blue almost green and white seat. Black wheel hubs (red brake caliper in the rear) White frame but has got red were your boots rub. I'm starting to think it's a bits a bike. Darcy
