Just bought a replica rear guard for a 1980 RM250. Now the strange thing is that at the very forward part of the guard are what appear to be mouldings to suit some kind of mounting around the airbox. The parts diagram shows that is definitely the case - two bolts secure the guard at the rear near the seat mounts and two at the front near the airbox. BUT... there is no sign of anything to mount the guard to on my frame, and the various photos and parts diagrams I've seen don't shed any light on it either. The frame is definitely an 80 'T' one. So... anyone with a 1980 RM250/400 tell me what the go is?

Hi Graeme, short version - 4 inch grinder and a marking pen.
Hope this helps?

Graeme
My guard has the same profile as yours by the sounds of it, being slack I just bolted it on with the four fixing points on the frame; it looks and works fine.
So the short answer is I don't know why it has that profile either, I thought it may be a bit of a hybrid design to suit a PE as well??

Is it way too small? A bit of work with the heat gun or hot water could soften it enough to fit if it's close. Maybe some rubber friendly grease as well.

It's probably an X rear guard, same looking but different mounts.

No it matches exactly the drawing in the parts diagram.

Its the two mounts at the front there. There is nothing I can see that they bolt to.

Here's the frame. The front mounts on the guard more or less line up with the cross member next to the sidecover tabs, but as you can see, no tabs for the guard.

The "T '  definately has  2  tabs welded to the cross bar of which fasteners 6-7-8  pass thru to mount guard .
From memory the  N mounted to the air box
Is it a " "N " frame   Huh

I suspected that it may have been a N, but it has the tabs for the upper chain roller and the fixed tensioner under the swingarm, and the swingarm has the long slides rather than the big one as on the N, so I think it is definitely a T frame. I will have to look closer and see if the tabs have been ground off, but from memory it doesn't look like it. A very weird thing...

Pretty much sure it's a T frame, but no sign of the elusive tabs. Guess I'll just have to zip tie it.

Having read it better - the N model 250 has no front mounts, the guard bolted through the airbox. If it is a N frame it won't have the lower chain roller

There are 2 tabs coming off the rear cross brace facing rearwards. Also 2 tabs above the seat mounting tabs. I can email/message a pic if you need.
