hi have posted this for a club member any assistance would be great,,,,
Can anyone verify which model flat slide carburettors are eligible for the Pre ‘85 VMX class.
My bike is a 1984 KX 500 which has a worn out Mikuni “TM” carb fitted. When I asked a supplier for a price on a replacement, he suggested that I use a Keihin “PWK” instead. However, he could not confirm whether it would comply with the GCR’s which state that “period flat slide carburettors can be used”.
If anybody knows for sure which model of carbs are eligible, be it Mikuni TM/TMX, Keihin PJ/PWK or whatever else there may be, I would much appreciate the feedback.

As I’m sure you could appreciate, I don’t want to invest in some thing that will be turned away at a National meeting or give Scrutineers headaches.

I have the same 84 KX500 and have put a new TM38-85 on it. They are cheap on ebay and the jetting is the same as your original TM. I have tried different needles but the one that works best is the one that comes with the carb. My bike is totally stock standard and I now have it jetted pretty well.

Needle jet = R4
Needle 6FJ41(standard with carb)
Main jet = 300
Pilot jet = 35
Slide = 4.0 (standard with carb)

The PWK is a better carb, but not legal for Pre-85.
Mboddy put up a list of carbs and dates - if you search for "Lectron" under his name, you should find it.

Too late, I went down to the shed earlier and welded an old spanner onto the gearshaft
